14th April 2009 This little chocolate point boy was born and despite it being Ebony's first litter she was fantastic.
9th May 2009 Another girl who had just had her litter decided she wanted Pippin as well as her own babies and sadly paralysed both his back legs and his tail.
10th May 2009 Straight to the vet, who felt perhaps putting him to sleep would be best. I wanted to give him some time and hope for improvement.
Very gradually, movement returned to his tail and left leg but not his right and he was dragging it behind him. He was unsteady and he kept falling to his weak side.
After numerous visits to my vet we hoped that he would get stronger and older then if necessary his right leg may have to be amputated, possibly when he was neutered.
20th May 2009 Pippin's paralysed leg was black. I was sure it had died and after speaking to my vet we arranged to take him to the surgery the next morning.
21st May 2009 Not a good feeling as I drove to my vet's, I knew I would have to make a hard decision, do I have him put to sleep or ask my vet to amputate his leg knowing that at only 5 weeks old he may not survive the operation? I had to give him a chance. I left him at the surgery feeling sick, the operation was now an emergency. Time goes so slowly when you are waiting for news. Later that day I heard that the surgery had been successful and I collected him in the evening. It was not going to be easy for him and we needed him to be stong. Ebony washed him all over and we hand fed him along with mum.
Each day passed and he weaned onto solid food but he was still very unsteady. As he got stronger his balance improved slowly, but his stump was bruising badly. His claws on his good leg were worn away and his foot was bruised. Please don't let this leg have problems!
1st June2009 Back to the vet's again today, but just for removal of his stitches and to check his mobility. My vet was pleased with his progress and we will just have to wait and hope he continues to improve.
July 2009 As you can see by the pictures he has grown and he does not know any different now. He chases his litter mates; he's the one that starts the fights and usually wins, and he races around with all the other cats.
He is such a special boy, to go through so much at such a young age through no fault ofhis own. At the moment he is staying with us , but you never know. If a really, really special home comes along we will see.
Now this is how he got his name; It started off Tripod for obvious reasons then was shortened to iPod (3gig got in the mix here but blame that on Neil, our elder son who plays drums in a local band called Callingforheroes). Then we remembered that Apple make iPods so we went on to varieties of apple and thought about cox's orange pippins and that's how we decided on Pippin. Sad or what!!!!!!!!!!!
1st July, today he goes for his first set of vaccinations and a full health check. I cant believe it ! My vet has now discovered a heart problem, this did not show up at the time of surgery, how much bad luck can he have. Lets hope its not too serious as he is not showing any breathlessness or fatigue.
31st July, back to the vets for his second vaccination, unfortunately he does have a heart problem, but my vet is hopefull that it may not cause him any problems until he is older. All i hope is that Pippin is not going to be one of those cats that seem to be unlucky enough to get everything going.
30/09/09 Today is the day to be neutered.
Tom, my vet at Forest Vetinary Practice checked Pippin 2 weeks ago with a view to being neutered, as one of his pom poms (testicles) had not as yet descended we decided to give him another 2 weeks growing time, after all with his heart problem the shortest anaesthetic possible would be best for him. Today his second pom pom had not completely descended but my vet felt confident that this was not going to be a problem. He had his pre-med and I left him in good hands.
2pm I rang to see how Pippin was but he had not as yet recovered from the anaesthetic, but there was no need to worry.
4.30pm I am at the surgery collecting my little brave boy. As soon as he was home all the girls, brother and playmates gave him the once over, although a little unsteady he just wanted to get into the heated bed with all his extended family. After he had slept he ate some poached salmon as if he had been starved for days and by 7pm he was racing round the house with all his mates.
